Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Belt Structure, Aurora / Naperville- IL

Ok ok…everyone knows what is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stand for. The person who wears it is an expert / master / most kick ass person in their respective martial art. Well, do you know what a blue belt stand for? Or where it is in relation to the belt structure of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Lets me summarize the belt structure for you:

– White Belt: a total beginner, an empty glass ready to be filled with information. A white belt has so much to learn that he or she cannot even focus on what  the game is about. He or She has to concentrate on balance and posture and to learn basic moves and be able to execute them. A white belt generally does not have any concept of a game or putting  moves together. White belt is a great stage! Everything is new and fresh and exciting. But it is also a time of frustration.

– The Blue belt has the basic moves down and is beginning to  execute them at a certain level but he or she is still not understanding what the game is all about. He or She learns a new move and wants to use it, regardless of the opponent is doing. He or she focused on the immediate result. Blue belts make a lot of mistakes. The moves are not yet ingrained and they do not have complete knowledge of when they need to use the moves.

– Purple belt: has the knowledge of most the moves that he or she needs to become a black belt. He or she is beginning to understand the game and can think a couple of moves ahead. His or she execution of the moves is much better than the blue belts but not close to the brown and black belts yet.

– Brown Belt: Brown is an elite belt, one step away from the coveted black. The brown belts in Jiu Jitsu knows as much as any black belt and has a good understanding of the game, as well as what is required to succeed both in training and competition. Unlike the blue and purple, the brown belt is capable of adjusting his game to fit the opponent.

– Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The black belt is attained once an individual has complete understanding of the sport. The black belt should be a leader, a studious individual who not only perfects his own moves but also looks deeper than the surface for the finest details and nuances that improve the effectiveness of each move. At this stage, it is not a matter of learning new moves but improving or better the moves. Once you achieve the black belt level, the game of becomes more mental.

So  the there you have it..the structure of belt colors in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It takes years and years to obtain a Black Belt but the journey is so worth it if it is right for you.
